Managing Energy Consumption

Mekorot aims to be a leader in energy efficiency and in minimizing the use of conventional sources of energy that harm the environment. Therefore, Mekorot’s operating and control systems of the company are characterized by four key elements:

 

  • Constant monitoring and improvement of pumping equipment efficiency
  • Pumping and supplying water during the day, when the demand for electricity is low (time of use tariffs)
  • Reducing energy losses in water transportation systems
  • Increasing volumes of pooling for maximum utilization of off-peak electricity rates
  • Developing and implementing computerized mathematical models for optimal operation of water supply systems

 

Moreover, Mekorot shares all operational arrangements with the IEC. The purpose of the arrangements is to ensure management of the load of the power system in the country in times of crisis in electricity supply, and, by doing so, contributing both to the water industry as well as to the electricity industry. Mekorot’s efforts are bearing fruit and it has succeeded in reducing about 1.5% of its annual electricity costs. Recently, Mekorot even decided to join the leading construction consortium of the "smart grid" for the management of water systems. The members of the consortium consist of the water companies, energy companies and academic institutions. This involves a combination of several measures, aimed at reducing the electricity consumption of the group which currently amounts to approximately 1,700 million kWh per annum, for the supply of approx.1,500 million cubic meters of water per annum. In other words, more energy efficiency.

 

Mekorot regards energy efficiency to be a key operational goal. The Group achieves this goal by applying a series of measures, including:

 

  • Improving pumping facility equipment and water transporting systems
  • Monitoring and controlling the performance and energy efficiency of the pumps over time
  • Separating stress areas
  • Reducing friction in the pipeline
  • Reinforcing transportation pipelines
