Green Water Technologies

At the same time, Mekorot is encouraging the integration of renewable energy technologies in its facilities – hydroelectric turbines, solar energy and bio-gas. These are environmentally green water technologies, such as the hydroelectric turbine which Mekorot developed and operates, which connects
to the National Carrier near the village of Kfar Yehoshua in the north. The hydroelectric turbine utilizes the excess water pressure for the purpose of generating electricity through clean energy power and in this way Mekorot reduces the greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide by approximately 3,000 tons per annum. It operates at the maximum capacity of 1,000 kW and produces about 4.5 million kW per hour, on average annually, which is supplied to Mekorot’s facilities nearby via the electricity grid. Moreover, Mekorot has installed a photovoltaic (solar absorption surfaces), with a capacity of approx. 50 kW, on the roof of the Sabha Desalination Plant in Eilat, and in the coming year it will promote the installation of seven systems with similar capacities – and even more – at other water sites.

 
Therefore, these technologies have three outstanding advantages:
•  The creation of clean energy that reduces air pollution
•  The use of natural resources that are not degradable
•  The maximum utilization of the terrain.
