Mekorot’s special capabilities have been built through necessity. As an arid region with
limited natural water resources, we have been forced to innovate. Over the years,
Mekorot has developed methods that maximize the utilization of all types of water:
groundwater, surface water, sewage, brackish water, seawater and drinking water.
To bring high-quality water to desert regions, we implemented the National Water Carrier,
a concept that was realized decades before its time.
To address the reality of hostile neighbors, we have invested heavily in water security
while simultaneously working out approaches to water sharing and allocation with out neighbors.
In recent years, we have invested in the development of high-capacity water desalination
and wastewater treatment plants, achieving world leadership in both areas.
In addition, through Watech™, our high-tech initiative, we have begun incentivizing the best of Israel’s scientists, engineers and technologists to further develop technologies in all these areas.

Mekorot Development & Enterprise establish cooperative ventures in the international market with leading professional-business enterprises and municipal water companies in number
of target countries such as Argentina and India, for the purpose of participating in tenders
and projects.
In the Israeli water market, Mekorot Development & Enterprise initiates water projects and operate municipal water systems, water treatment plants and waste water treatment plants.
The Company works cooperatively with civil and municipal authorities, as well as with local private water companies
As a flagship project, Mekorot Development & Enterprise is promoting the designing and building of a sea water desalination plant in Ashdod which will be one of the largest of its
type in the world (100 Mm3/year), implementing advanced technologies and processes.
The planned date of completion of the project is 2011.
