Pursuant to the escalating water crisis and the increase in water consumption, and out of a sense of national responsibility, mission and commitment, Mekorot has begun to plan a massive project - the New National Water Carrier - that will connect to the national water system. This national project, which is the result of extensive research and and planning, is being executed with a visionary national outlook for the benefit of the present generation and generations to come. Upon its completion the water will flow in all directions: from the west to the east, north, south.
As part of this project the New National Carrier will connect the local desalination facilities to the national water supply system. These desalination facilities are located along the coast: Hadera, Palmahim, Soreq, Ashkelon, and the facility in Ashdod that the Mekorot Group is building through its subsidiary - Mekorot Development & Enterprise.
Upon its completion, 75% of the domestic water consumption will be based on desalinated sea water; and for the first time in Israel, it will be possible to rehabilitate the country’s natural water reservoirs. The construction of the desalination facilities required a change in direction for Israel’s traditional water supply and the course of the main water arteries. This change is expressed in the entire water supply chain and includes the creation of infrastructure, integrating cutting edge technologies. As part of this project, Mekorot is laying giant water pipe lines, building stations, operational covered reservoirs to ensure a high quality of water over time, and operational pools - the largest of their kind.
The Fifth System for the Supply of Water to Jerusalem, which will offer a solution to the anticipated increase in water consumption in Jerusalem and its environs in the next decades, will also be connected to the New Water Carrier.
The National Water System, which includes the New Water Carrier, is characterized by the optimal integrated management of the water sources and operational flexibility and efficiency in the field of energy. The system enables a real-time response to the changing demands of the various water consumers - domestic households, factories and agricultural fields - while taking into account both the demand and the production capability.
