Water Supply

Over a period of 70 years, Mekorot has implemented a range of novel systems and methods to supply water with high reliability and safety.

In 2007, Mekorot will deliver over 1.5 billion cubic meters of fresh and treated water in Israel, representing 80% of the country’s drinking water supply and 70% of its overall water consumption.

Mekorot supplies water to approximately 5,000 intermediary water providers, including municipalities, regional associations, agricultural settlements and industrial consumers.

One of the company’s greatest achievements has been the development and operation of a nationwide water network that allows it to move water rapidly from freshwater sources and treatment facilities to water distributors and end users.

Mekorot has also developed world-leading capabilities in:

  • efficient utilization of water resources
  • employment of remote control and ‘smart’ systems to operate water facilities
  • development of water supply systems for agriculture use in arid zones

Mekorot provides a range of water supply consulting and project development services in the areas of:

  • water supply reliability, efficiency and quality
  • next-generation water treatment system installation
  • water resource development
  • minimization of water loss and operational costs

Water Supply Statistics

  • Total water supply:  1.5 billion cu.m per year
  • Highest daily water supply: 5.4m cu. m
  • round water recharge: 27.3mcm year
  • Energy consumption: 1,994Mkw year
  • Distribution points: 9,265
  • Water pipes length: 10,500  kilometers
  • Pumping stations: 1,229
  • Wells: 1,040
  • Reservoirs: 91
  • Tanks: 637
  • Desalination plants: 31
  • Control centers: 8

Infrastructure Capabilities

During 2007, Mekorot will invest over $200 million to augment Israel’s water supply through the development of advanced water desalination and treated wastewater production facilities, new water quality and security systems, command and control centers.

Current capital projects demonstrate Mekorot’s substantial water supply capabilities:

  • large seawater desalination facility (Ashdod)
  • brackish water desalination facilities (Lahat and Atlit)
  • water security systems in numerous locations
  • expansions of water treatment (Shafdan) and wastewater reclamation plants  (location)
  • construction of the fifth pipeline to Jerusalem
  • further connection of local authorities to the national water grid

Advanced Tools

Mekorot has developed a wide array of proprietary computerized models and decision support systems including:

  • SCADA control systems
  • models for operating a national water system, (water demand forecasting, water system planning, weather and water level forecasting, integrating desalinated sea water into a national water supply system)
  • chemical and biological models
  • decision support systems for operating aquifers
  • hydrological models for optimal operation
  • statistical models for analyzing changes and trends in water supply systems
