Mekorot operates approximately 3,000 water plants and other facilities using sophisticated, computerized control systems which remotely and automatically control the Israel’s water supply.
The systems, which constitute an important management tool in the day-to-day operation of Mekorot’s plants, ensure the reliability, availability, quality and safety of the water supply while reducing operational costs.
The systems are also used as a platform for reducing energy costs, cutting down water loss and protecting water plants.
The computerized control systems stand behind the operation of water plants throughout the country. Combining both hardware and software, they contribute significantly to the optimal functioning of these facilities and help to develop the water market in Israel.
The systems allow an advanced and efficient work environment characterized by three primary qualities:
- communication – rapid and accurate data transfer
- control – maximum control by simple and flexible data collection
- command – complete command over water supply systems
The combination of these qualities facilitates the operation of water systems and plants while ensuring a reliable, available and high quality supply of water as well as increased savings in manpower, energy and reduced water loss.
The remote control and command systems are hierarchic, controlling decentralized, regional and national water networks via a sophisticated control system.
They also reduce the need for field inspections to update or maintain facilities. The hierarchic system connects the control rooms via communication centers, with the RTU's, including boreholes, pumping stations, reservoirs, filtration systems, water treatment plants and monitoring facilities.
Eight sophisticated control centers form the heart of Israel’s water supply network.
Mekorot’s command and control systems create a continuously updated databases from data supplied by remote sensors that are used to create reports and graphs in order to predict future trends. The systems are also sustainable and scalable.
SCADA Control SystemsMekorot’s remote control systems are based on powerful SCADA technology. This technology captures incoming data from various water plants and facilities (numbering in the hundreds of RTU's) and processes it into a system of predefined parameters that reflects the functioning of the water supply. The SCADA program works together with applications in the RTU's that are required for automatic surveillance of predetermined operational aspects of the RTU's such as capacity and pressure, boosters and pumps operation, pH levels, conductivity, turbidity, chloride level, security alerts.
System data is transferred by advanced control units connected to the RTU's which can be programmed for various applications in order to make “smart” localized decisions.
Data flow is directed according to the system hierarchy through various media including telephone lines, cellular networks, satellite networks and radio networks. Rapid communications enable command and control over a large number of RTU's at the same time, mapping them and graphically representing their functioning for impressive clarity and intelligibility. | |
